Walnuts Improve Health Metrics
A 2023 study found that eating eight walnuts a day can decrease the risk of stroke by 17% and heart attacks by 15-23%. Even more than cardiovascular health, eating walnuts has been linked to decreased parameters of aging, increased vitamin and mineral intake, decreased depression, and better sleep. Now, a new 2024 study details the several mechanisms behind the benefits.
>> Dr. Neuman says: "I've been eating eight walnuts daily in the morning since I read the 2023 study. For an extra special treat, try toasting walnuts. Preheat oven to 350°F. Arrange walnuts on a cookie sheet in a single layer. Bake eight-ten minutes."
New Age Reduction for Prostate Cancer Screening for Black Men
A long-awaited guideline update from the Prostate Cancer Foundation recommends starting to discuss screening for prostate cancer using the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test for Black men beginning at 40 years of age. Prostate Cancer in Black men has been shown to start 3 - 9 years earlier compared to non-Black men. Black men are diagnosed later and have worse outcomes with Prostate Cancer.
>> Dr. Neuman says: "I recommend anyone of color with a prostate start discussing prostate cancer screening at 40. PSA tests can detect abnormalities, but elevated levels don't always indicate cancer. Additional tests like MRIs help clarify. Screening may lead to unnecessary biopsies and overtreatment, but for most Black people with a prostate, the benefits outweigh the risks."
